Austin fuzz rock band The Blistering Speeds signed a two-year record deal with Texas label Star Dot Star this week. The Speeds will begin recording their first full-length LP, “Casablanca Is a State of Mind,” with former Paperwork guitarist and singer Ross Ingram in January and expect to complete it by summer 2012.

“We are really excited to work with Star Dot Star,” Blistering Speeds singer and guitarist Scotty Loewen said of the deal. ”This is a label that understand the aesthetic of the record we want to make. Ross knows what albums inform our sound and can help us turn that into something original and special.”

“Casablanca Is A State of Mind” will be around 11 tracks in length and aspires to capture the spirit of every good band that has run through a Big Muff. The architecture of CIASOF will come from the blueprints of spiraling churners like My Bloody Valentine’s “Loveless,” employing more guitar sounds than guitar solos and an minimum of ballads.

For the slow ones, the band would like to solicit kind comparisons to Suicide.

About the band

Honing a sound that blends the creamy fuzz of Hum with the urgency of the Pixies and Pere Ubu, the Blistering Speeds have spent the past year and a half gorging on the fat of the Central Texas rock scene, playing shows in Austin, San Antonio and Houston. Their live shows often sublimate from guitar rock to experimental noise, some of which is documented on the Internet Archive.

About the label

Star Dot Star is the scrappy record label of former Paperwork bandmates Ross Ingram and Jarrod MacKay. The same blue-collar, DIY spirit that went into their band (ferreting away vacation time to tour, writing press releases on lunch breaks) goes into running their label. Their goal is to enable bands to make records with reasonable contracts that they don’t have to sacrifice gainful employment to sell. “Casablanca” will be the sixth release for the label, which will be adjacent to releases by twee crooners Maps of Asia and Ingram’s new solo project, Magic Landing.
